Rocky Joins The Gray Family (for 3 Months)

So we decided a new job, car, house and baby just weren't enough.

To pile on to our two two year olds and our six week old, we have added a puppy. It's actually my friend's dog - a chihuahua/pug mix, better known as a "chug". Rocky already is acting very comfortable in our home, and the twins adore him, of course.

So now we've got a home with six. Two adults, two toddlers, one infant, and one pup! Whee!

How old is your pet?

Pets age much the same as we do, but at an accelerated rate. In order to offset this faster aging process and detect potentially serious age-related diseases and conditions at the earliest stages, most veterinarians recommend that healthy senior dogs and cats be examined every six months.

Sugar was 11 last March. Freedom was 9 on September 2nd. (He shares his birthday with Terrie.) So...Sugar is a geriatric.  Freedom is a senior, but he still acts like a puppy. Sugar has lots of "old age" problems, very similar to mine.

Laszlo's Gift

Last night when we went out to get the mail, Laszlo found a King snake in the grass. He tried to play with it -- thus the bulging wound -- and cried for hours to have it back once I took it. I haven't decided if I want to keep it: would probably be a lot of trouble. They're constrictors, and I'm not crazy about buying/raising mice to feed it, so I'll probably let it go soon.

Still, it's fun to see a little spunky snake in the yard.

Tonight I finally unpacked the Christmas present Mom got Rick and me and put the fish bowl on top.

Guess who really likes having the fish at his level? Laszlo! He's fascinated.

More Dog Tales

Ever since I met the black lab puppy down the street - cute as a "Button" - I wanted one. Then, I got Morena who turned out to be not quite black and not quite a lab (shhhh, don't tell her she's not Button's sister). Now they are the best of friends and spend time together every day. Button's dad, Philippe, is a school teacher and my classes are mostly at night, so we kind of share custody and make sure everybody gets fed and exercised.
I has been the best arrangement, and all was well until 9 days ago when Button was bitten on the ear by another dog. So we walked the mile or so back and she still hadn't stopped bleeding - yikes! So she had to go to the vet and get 10 tiny stitches and wear a cone on h
er head (that Morena is scared of). It has been a long 9 days, and Button gets her stitches out tomorrow, so hopefully they can play together again soon. Here's a picture from a couple months ago.

What you don't know Can hurt you... and your dog.

When Jeremy and I were growing up, we mastered the art of tossing grapes across the room and catching them in our mouths. Now that I am an adult, with a husband and house of my own, I promptly had to continue the game when I brought a bunch of green grapes home from the store.
The ones we didn't catch, Sydney ate to her delight. She LOVED them! She begged for more. We worried that too many might give her loose stools, so, we only let her have three. That may have saved her life.
I had no idea that grapes are one of the most poisonous things that you can give to a dog. In fact, a few more could have been fatal. She was just fine. No problems from the three, but, I thought I should let all of you know since I know how much we all love our pets. I was lucky enough to have Wes Google what fruits I could give her and found out before it was to late, and I learned a valuable lesson. Never give your loved ones food unless you check first!
