Today, my beat-up, long-since paid for, 1998 Mercury Tracer crossed over the 100,000 mile marker, and currently rests in the office parking lot at a nice, binary-oriented 100001, which upon further review from an online binary decoder, translates as "!", appropriately enough.
That's a lot of miles, and given I haven't had to pay anything beyond gas and regular upkeep since just after the turn of the century, I guess I'm lucky it works as well as it does, though next to my colleagues' brand-new Lexus, BMWs, Infinitis and Porsches, the car wilts in comparison. Sometimes I'm sure that the event of my recent birth has guaranteed I will always be behind those who had the luck to enjoy the late-90's tech boom, and I may never catch up.
In other mileage-related news, Kristine and I are going to soon celebrate our one-year anniversary (and her Spring Break) by heading back to Hawaii - this time to Maui, after last year's honeymoon stay in Kona. We leave on Saturday, April 17 and come back early Thursday morning, April 22, traveling more than 2,400 miles each way. Two days later, on the 24th, I fly out to New York City, for an industry trade show, Storage Decisions. Having received the flight confirmations this morning, that puts an additional 2,586 miles each direction on my accrued mileage, not to mention the time zone differential of five hours between Maui and New York City.
At least, while I am traveling, my car can rest.
For what it's worth, my car reached the 125,000 mile marker tonight, only 1,157 days after this post. That's an average of 21.6 miles per day, or 7,886 miles per year. I am thinking that's on the low side.
